Taylor Russell McKenzie was conceived in Vancouver, British Columbia on July 18th, 1994. She was also raised in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. Russell was the daughter of a black dad and a white mom. She was raised primarily with her mother's family. She stated that her skin color was the primary reason for her feeling disregarded by her peers as growing up. Their family was struggling with financial issues. They were constantly moving and moved sixteen times to support her father's work. However, despite this hardship, Russell mentioned how in her younger years "there always was a chance for reinvention, to create something new."As as a young person, Russell was already artistically at first. she desired to pursue a profession in ballet, and later become a painter. At the age of 18, she took her first acting class, and finally found her way to. She saved the money from work to buy a car and drove off to Los Angeles to audition. She would return to work when her cash was exhausted and would then begin performing. The routine continued for four more years until she was offered her first TV part.
